7 Days Rwenzori Mountains Hike

The Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon, are situated in the western part of Uganda, running along the border with Congo. These mountains, located on the equator, feature snow-capped peaks that include Africa’s third highest point. The lower slopes of the mountains are covered in lush moorland, bamboo forests, and vibrant montane forests teeming with life. The mountainsides are adorned with towering tree-heathers, colorful mosses, and magnificent lobelias and “everlasting flowers,” creating a captivating and almost magical landscape. Within the national park, you’ll find a diverse array of wildlife, including 70 mammal species and 217 bird species. Among them are 19 endemic species found in the Albertine Rift region, as well as some of the rarest vegetation in the world.

Embarking on this 7-day Mount Rwenzori Hiking Central Circuit offers an unparalleled trekking adventure, reaching an impressive altitude of 5,109 meters. It’s important to ensure you are in good physical condition to successfully reach Margherita Peak, but the journey itself is incredibly enjoyable and awe-inspiring.

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive from Kampala to Kasese, the gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains. The journey takes approximately 6-7 hours, but you'll enjoy beautiful landscapes along the way. Upon arrival in Kasese, check into your accommodation and prepare for the trek. Rest and acclimatize to the higher altitude.
After an early breakfast, drive to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park headquarters in Nyakalengija. Meet your guides and porters, and complete the necessary permits and briefing. Begin your trek through dense rainforest, crossing the Mahoma River. Arrive at Nyabitaba Hut, where you'll spend the night. Enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The trek from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut typically takes around 4 to 5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 8 kilometers.
Following a substantial breakfast, depart from Nyabitaba Hut towards John Maate Hut situated at an altitude of 3505 meters. Traverse through thick shrubs and forests, making your way towards the Kurt Shafer area where the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers meet, which takes approximately half an hour. Continue your trek through the alpine forest, enjoying the stunning scenery and breathtaking views of Mount Stanley and Speke. Take a break for lunch at Nyamulejju Rock Shelter, savoring the majestic surroundings. Afterward, proceed towards John Maate Hut, where you can unwind, have a leisurely dinner, and spend the night in a comfortable setting.
Trek through the moorland zone, where giant lobelias and groundsel plants dominate the landscape. Ascend further, crossing the Bujuku River and ascending the steep slopes. Arrive at Bujuku Hut, located in a stunning location near Lake Bujuku and Mount Speke.
Today's trek is challenging as you climb higher and enter the alpine zone. Ascend the steep slopes of Scott Elliot Pass (4,372m) and continue to Elena Hut. If conditions permit, make an optional ascent to Margherita Peak (5,109m), the highest point in the Rwenzori Mountains. Descend to Mubuku River Camp for overnight.
Descend through the bamboo and rainforest zone, enjoying the diverse flora and fauna. Reach Nyakalengija and bid farewell to the mountains. Drive back to Kampala or proceed to Entebbe for your departure flight.
