The Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon, are situated in the western part of Uganda, running along the border with Congo. These mountains, located on the equator, feature snow-capped peaks that include Africa’s third highest point. The lower slopes of the mountains are covered in lush moorland, bamboo forests, and vibrant montane forests teeming with life. The mountainsides are adorned with towering tree-heathers, colorful mosses, and magnificent lobelias and “everlasting flowers,” creating a captivating and almost magical landscape. Within the national park, you’ll find a diverse array of wildlife, including 70 mammal species and 217 bird species. Among them are 19 endemic species found in the Albertine Rift region, as well as some of the rarest vegetation in the world.
Embarking on this 7-day Mount Rwenzori Hiking Central Circuit offers an unparalleled trekking adventure, reaching an impressive altitude of 5,109 meters. It’s important to ensure you are in good physical condition to successfully reach Margherita Peak, but the journey itself is incredibly enjoyable and awe-inspiring.
